CALLS for better street lighting in certain areas of the town were made at Monday's meeting of Bungay Town Council.

It came after members had heard a letter from Charles Stewart, of Manor Road, expressing concern about the poor street lighting there.

Now the council is to contact Suffolk County Council asking for it to be improved there and also at other dark spots at the St John's Road end of Wingfield Street, and adjacent to new housing developments in Nethergate Street.

John Palin said Mrs Stewart was partially sighted and it was very dark in the area around her home.

“It is something that is needed. In the past week I have had two other calls from people in a similar vein. Nethergate Street is like the Black Hole of Calcutta. If there was not a lighting scheme built into the development there it should followed up. And Wingfield Street has a dark corner - a light has been removed there.”

Town Clerk Peter Morrow suggested members put together a list of lighting problem spots and he would write to the county council asking them to rectify the deficiencies.
