FATHER Christmas's helpers in the Waveney Valley are preparing for a busy night tomorrow, when the festive lights are switched on at both Beccles and Bungay.

Bungay's Buttercross will be the focus of celebrations in the town between 6pm and 8pm, with pantomime actors from the Fisher Theatre helping create a magical night for families. Pantomime dame Steve Ace will undertake the switch-on of the lights and Father Christmas will be in his grotto. Along with stalls selling food and seasonal items, there will also be a competition for under 12s for the best dressed Victorian.

The Beccles event, which starts at 5.45pm, will see shopkeepers and stallholders dressed in Victorian costume to add to the atmosphere of the night, with Gary Walker from 60s and 70s band the Walker Brothers taking to the stage. He will appear alongside author and historian Alison Weir in a horse- drawn carriage with Father Christmas in time to perform the official switch-on at 6pm before Santa prepares to greet youngsters in his grotto at St Michael's Church.

Norfolk writer and raconteur Keith Skipper will be at Bookthrift signing copies of his new book.
