Chance to create a piece of history in Halesworth as council calls for road name suggestions
Residents of Halesworth are being given the chance to get involved in creating “a small piece of history” in the town.
The town council is asking local people to suggest possible new street names for the developments that may go ahead in Halesworth in the future.
Suggestions already put forward include a tribute to former Halesworth in Bloom leader Tamsyn Imison, who worked tirelessly to promote town’s unique beauty. She died aged 80 in September this year.
A council spokesman said: “This is a chance to be involved in creating a small piece of history.
“Recent new names that have been accepted are ‘Palfrey Place’ named after the medieval sale of horses or ‘palfreys’ that used to take place on the site and ‘Laurie Shepherd Close’ after the middle school arts teacher.
“Other suggestions received that are being considered are Zemke Way after US Colonel Hubert Zemke based at Holton during the Second World War and a road named after Dame Tamsyn Imison for her years of service to Halesworth In Bloom.”
The suggested names need to follow guidelines from Waveney District Council in order to be considered.
These include: names that refer to a person or event should have a connection to the area, names of living people should not be used in order to avoid the possibility of any future negative publicity, family names of deceased persons must have permission from living relatives, names which follow a theme should reflect the history or environment, names which are difficult to pronounce or spell should not be used along with names which may be deemed offensive.
The guidelines also say that names which use the word ‘royal’ or reference the royal family must obtain consent from the Lord Chamberlain’s office before being considered, and phonetically similar names along with names which include numbers should be avoided to stop confusion.
Any suggestions can be emailed to email@example.com or put in writing to the clerk’s office at Halesworth Town Council, London Road, Halesworth, IP19 8LW.
