The founder of a leading meningitis charity has passed on his sympathy to a Halesworth family after they lost their six-year-old son to the devastating illness.

Oliver Hall was admitted to James Paget University Hospital on Monday, October 23, after showing symptoms of meningitis B.

Despite hospital staff doing all they could to save Oliver’s life, the bacterial infection had already become too much for his body to withstand and he died in the early hours of Tuesday, October 24.

Having heard about Oliver’s passing, Meningitis Now founder Steve Dayman - whose own baby son died from the disease - sent a message of support to his parents, Georgie and Bryan Hall.

“On behalf of Meningitis Now, which represents thousands of families affected by the devastation caused by meningitis and associated diseases, I pass on our heartfelt sympathy to Oliver’s family and friends,” said Mr Dayman.

“I lost my baby son Spencer to the disease some time ago and can well imagine the pain that all those who knew Oliver are suffering.”

Mr Dayman also warned of the dangers of meningitis, which is more commonly contracted by babies and young children.

“Recognising the signs and symptoms, trusting your instincts, early diagnosis and early treatment can all improve the outcomes of meningitis and make the difference between life and death,” he said.

“At Meningitis Now we are fighting back against all forms of meningitis-related disease.”

Meningitis is the inflammation of the membranes that protect the brain and spinal cord, and can be caused by different bacterial and viral organisms; symptoms include fever, vomiting, headaches and a rash.

In 2015, the meningitis B vaccine was introduced into NHS routine for babies under 12 months, but Meningitis Now argue that a vaccine for everyone would be cost-effective.
