A NEW sports and playing field could be opened in Woodton to benefit children and the rest of the community.

Land behind the primary school at Woodton could become a playing field with marked-out pitches to be used by the pupils as well as other youngsters.

The farmland, on the corner of Church Road and Norwich Road, is owned by Woodton's new playing field committee, which has applied for planning consent to turn it into a community field.

The primary school would be allowed to use it during the day and for events or sports competitions which are too big for its existing field to hold.

Some villagers fear that neighbours would suffer more noise, but school head Pauline McGowan said the scheme would provide a focal point for the community.

She added that the playing field would improve parking and access for the school - which stands beside the busy B1332 Norwich to Bungay road - because parents would be able to collect their children from Church Road instead.

A decision on the application will be made by South Norfolk Council.
