After four years of planning, campaigning and building the Beccles skatepark has been opened, bringing together skaters of all ages.

The Beccles Skatepark Community and Beccles Town Council have celebrated the opening of new £150,000 skatepark.

Young and old thrill-seekers rushed to the common to test out the new park on Thursday (April 4).

“It’s done, it’s ready, it’s open and it’s amazing,” The Beccles Skatepark community said in a Facebook post.

Skatepark community chairman, Nik Rose said: “I still can’t believe it is real, we just didn’t think it would happen.

“It is all worth it, I had the best sleep last night - it has been four years and it is finally done.

“It was so stressful, I had people asking me on a daily basis when it will open.”

Since 2015, skaters were fighting to replace the tired wooden skatepark in Common Lane South.

From the beginning, it was the skatepark’s users who were the driving force behind the campaign, planning out what they would like to see from the new build.

“I am over the moon, I can’t accept something like this is now in Beccles,” he said.

After his son started skating, Mr Rose pulled together with the skaters to make their dream a reality.

“I have done this all to help the skaters,” he said

At the time, he said: “People complain about things they want in the town but this goes to show if you have got a good idea, come up with a plan and have a good team it can be achieved – things can happen.

“The council allowed us to do what we want. The skatepark has been designed by consulting with the skaters - it gives them everything they want. Everyone involved should be proud of what they have achieved.”

The Beccles Skatepark Community will host an official opening on May 5. The weekend opening will run all day and have a skate competition, lessons and a barbecue to celebrate the latest addition to the town.
