A CONTROVERSIAL one-way road trial in Beccles is set to be made permanent in spite of objections and calls for the traffic flow to be reversed.

Grove Road, a busy hill leading out of the town centre which is often double parked, was made one-way last February on a temporary basis in a bid to ease congestion.

Suffolk County Council will decide on Tuesday whether to make the one-way scheme permanent in spite of 30 objections from people living along the road, half of whom asked for the flow to be reversed and the other 15 wanted it to be put back to two-way traffic.

The council will also consider whether permanently to stop motorists driving down Hungate Lane. People living along the narrow town centre road have been campaigning for months for bollards to be put in place to stop motorists.

If the council agrees to make both schemes permanent, the junction of Grove Road West and Gosford Road is set to be improved and bollards will be put up in Hungate as part of road improvement works in the town costing £25,000.
