THE Beccles v Bungay Challenge reaches its climax next week with the final event of the 2008 series.

The town councils from the two towns go head-to-head in a quiz at the King's Head Hotel at Beccles - and when that is over the challenge trophy will be presented to the winning town.

The Journal, which organises the annual event aimed at bringing organisations in the twin Waveney Valley towns together in friendly competition, is providing a splendid new trophy which will be presented each year to the winners.

Beccles are in pole position to take it for the first time. Bungay have won it for the past two years, but Beccles lead by two points this year, thanks to a victory in the ten-pin bowling challenge between the Beccles and Bungay medical centres.

Teams of six, comprising GPS and reception staff from the Beccles Medical Centre and the Bungay Medical Centre competed in the tenpin match at Potter's Resort, Hopton. The Beccles team emerged victorious with 1164 points to their opponents 1040.

“Bungay have vowed their revenge for next year,” said Dr Tim Morton, who organised the Beccles team.

There are two challenges left, a jenga challenge this evening between Worlingham Pharmacy and St Mary's Practice, Bungay, at Bungay, and the town council quiz on Wednesday.

Terry Reeve, associate editor of the Beccles and Bungay Journal, which organises the challenge, said there was still all to play for, and everyone was welcome to go along to the quiz.

At the event, attractive plaques will also be presented to each of the winning teams in this year's challenge, and he hoped representatives of the teams would be there to receive them. The quiz starts at 7pm.
