COUNTY chairman Joanna Spicer is getting back to normality today after breaking her shoulder in a freak accident during a trip to the other side of the world.

Mrs Spicer was with husband Christopher on a business trip to Kuala Lumpur last month when the couple went on a short trip to the Malaysian island of Sarawak to visit the jungle and a sanctuary for orangutans.

“We went on what was potentially quite a dangerous trek through the jungle and trips on small river boats.

“Then on our last morning we were exploring the capital of Sarawak, Kuching, when we went to look at the old colonial buildings.

“When we were at the last one, the gates were locked and I was trying to see it when I fell down a manhole which had had its cover stolen - presumably to be melted down.

“I cut my leg quite badly, suffered bad bruising, and shattered my shoulder. I was in serious pain but was taken to the hospital where they operated on me and fitted a metal plate.

“They were marvellous.”

Mrs Spicer said the authorities were upset about the accident and took great care to ensure she was made as comfortable as possible.

She was back in harness at the county council within days of returning, although had to wear a hidden sling at her first council meeting.

“I'm getting better slowly - but I am still on painkillers which make you feel a bit tired and drowsy.

“I cannot drive for about three months - that's a real pain but I'm lucky to get people driving me about and everyone has been very good and helpful to me,” she said.
