A TRAINEE accountant and her French boyfriend have been told to pay compensation to a man who ran naked through their Suffolk garden.

Drunken streaker Zoltan Harper hurled abuse at Victor Csonka and pushed over Candice Nice before running headlong into a wheelie bin and breaking his jaw, Ipswich Crown Court heard on Friday.

Csonka and Nice were so angry they chased after Harper until he crashed into the bin and lay covered in rubbish. They then kicked him in the head and body, the court was told.

Richard Potts, prosecuting, said Mr Harper and a friend had been drinking at the Royal Oak pub in Beccles and were almost home when the incident happened last August 9.

He said: “Mr Harper unexpectedly took off all his clothes except for his shoes and ran up Denmark Road naked shouting in joyous abandon”.

He said he was so drunk he only remembered leaving the pub and then being in hospital. His friends and the two defendants pieced together the missing events and the court heard he provoked Csonka and Nice, who had been drinking at home that evening.

Csonka and Nice pleaded guilty to causing Mr Harper actual bodily harm.

John Morgans, mitigating for 27-year-old Csonka, of Caxton Road, Beccles, said he had over-reacted, adding: “He is genuinely ashamed for what he has done. It's totally out of character for this hard working man. This is his first brush with the law.”

Rachel Bright for Nice, 18, also of Caxton Road, said her future as an accountant was now in jeopardy, adding: “She has led an impeccable life up until now. She made a foolish and unpleasant mistake. She is shocked and ashamed.”

Judge John Devaux said: “The facts of this case are indeed slightly unusual. I have regard to provocation and the behaviour of the victim who entered into your garden. You were affected by drink and he was so affected by drink he could not defend himself. You lost the plot and over-reacted.”

Csonka was told to do 120 hours' unpaid work and ordered to pay Mr Harper 1,750 in compensation. Nice was told to do 80 hours' unpaid work and ordered to pay 1,250 compensation.

Judge Devaux said the penalty had been lowered to reflect the victim's behaviour.
