THE Scout movement in Halesworth this week issued an urgent appeal for people to volunteer as leaders following the resignation of the leader and assistant leader of the Cub pack.

Unless replacements can be found, the Cub pack of the 1st Halesworth Scout Group could be forced to close, despite having a healthy number of Cubs in it.

Group Scout leader Richard Easton said the resignations of the two were unrelated to the Cubs and were through force of circumstance.

“But this leaves the Cub Pack without any leadership and in a very precarious position. We are fortunate that two experienced leaders from Beccles, who have helped us before, are willing again to help us out while in this difficult situation and keep the pack going, but this will be for the short term only,” he said.

The executive committee, despite several appeals, has been unable to attract new members to support the Group, which affected fundraising in particular, he said.

“The Group is committed to keeping this traditional, valuable and enjoyable activity going for the children of Halesworth and it is vital that we pull together so it is not lost to our community. Without some willing adult help, the future of our Cub Pack and therefore Scouts, is in jeopardy,” Mr Easton warned.

The group is launching an urgent appeal to find adults and young adults from the local area, willing to help, and hopefully become leaders, assistant leaders, young helpers and/or Committee Members.

“No previous experience of Scouting is necessary, but leader/helper roles require a general interest in the kind of activities involved in the Scouting Movement and the ability to follow a structured programme of activities, which can be adapted to suit you,” Mr Easton added. “Most important is the aptitude and enthusiasm to work with children, aged 8-10. Support and training will be given.

Young adults, former Scouts and Duke of Edinburgh Award scheme participants, parents and relatives of members would be welcome. Cubs currently meet on a Monday evening at 7-8.30pm, but the day or time could be changed to suit the right candidate.

The committee helpss the Group by administering finances, organising hut maintenance, recruitment and fundraising. A full and thriving Committee is vital to the continued success of the Group.

“We urgently need new Committee members to replace long-standing members that have stood down, particularly from our member parent and family group,” he said. “The main requirement is enthusiasm We meet 8-10 months a year at a short evening meeting. There could be some additional time involved once or twice a year for fundraising or hut maintenance perhaps, but it is really not a great demand of your time.”
