Motorists have voiced their dismay after being pelted with rocks while driving in the dark at speeds in excess of 50mph.

Several drivers have reported being hit in recent days on the A146 and A143 in locations including Barnby, Stockton and Ditchingham.

Although the exact nature of the objects being thrown is uncertain, they are thought to be stones or rocks due to the dents resulting from their impact.

Dashcam footage captured on Sunday (June 2) by Gary Friend, who lives on Fair Close in Beccles, shows an object flying towards his car which appears to originate from a vehicle driving in the opposition direction.

Mr Friend was driving to Lowestoft along the Barnby bends at 10.40pm and later discovered the bonnet of his car had sustained significant damage.

"The footage isn't completely clear but I saw an arm come out of the back window and throw what must have been a large rock given the damage it caused.

"A couple of inches higher and it would've hit the windscreen in front of my eyes. It might not have gone through, but could easily have made me swerve off the road because it scares the hell out of you.

"Whoever's doing this is committing a mindless act and putting lives at risk. It's downright dangerous and eventually someone's going to get killed."

On the same evening, fellow Beccles resident Andrew Thurtle says a rock of "five-six inches" was thrown at his car as he drove on the A146 towards his home.

Mr Thurtle, 43, had even told his partner to be watchful after already seeing warnings on social media.

"I couldn't turn anywhere when the rock came towards me because I was on the bends, so I just braced myself," said Mr Thurtle. "Once I got home I phoned the police and posted on Facebook to let people know.

"I don't understand the mentality of the people doing this. I don't know whether they are trying to cause damage or actually cause an accident, but they need to think about the impact this could have."

Suffolk police have received reports of several incidents and say they are "conducting a full investigation to apprehend those responsible."

Anyone with information or dashcam footage is asked to call 101, quoting CAD 11 of June 3.
