WAVENEY District Council is asking anyone thinking of becoming a councillor to come along to a dedicated event to find out more.

The event will be held on Wednesday February 10 from 5pm to 9pm in the Council Chamber, Town Hall, High Street, Lowestoft. Those who are thinking about standing and anyone already selected to stand in this year's local election are encouraged to come along and find out more.

The event is a 'drop in' opportunity to speak to political group leaders, existing Members and the officers in support services.

You will find out what a typical day is like, what happens once successfully elected, the support offered, development opportunities and much more.

More information can also be found in the 'Councillors' section of Waveney District Council's website at www.waveney.gov.uk/My+Council/Councillors.

Councillors hold their office for a period of four years and newly elected Councillors will be joining local government at a time of significant change, which presents them with great opportunities to make a difference in their communities.

You can be a candidate if you are over 18, on the electoral register and have lived, worked or owned property in the area for at least the past 12 months. Most candidates are nominated through a political party, but individuals are welcome to stand in their own right. Before you can be accepted as a candidate you must get one person to agree to propose your nomination and another person to agree to second the proposal. Both of these people must also be on the electoral register.

Details of elections and the statement of persons nominated are published, when applicable, on the Council's website.
