Members of the public were given their first glimpse of proposals for a major housing development in Loddon.

The plans, by developer Taylor Wimpey, were revealed at an exhibition at the town's library yesterday.

The parish council arranged for the developer to display its plans for the Beccles Road site before it submits a fresh planning application to the council.

A previous application for 112 new homes was refused unanimously by South Norfolk Council last year on a number of grounds, including that the application did not involve the building of any affordable housing and that the site was too car-dominant. The parish council had recommended refusal, saying that the town's sewerage schools parking medical and recreation facilities were already stretched and that the developer had offered no contribution towards infrastructure costs.

The proposal is for the former Express Plastics factory site, which has since moved to a new location at Ellough, near Beccles. The developer says it has made several amendments to the scheme in direct response to local people's concerns.

The new 112-home scheme includes a mixture of detached, semi-detached and terraced houses, and a village green, which will become the focal point of the development.

In addition, where the previous scheme did not allocate any of the properties to affordable homes, 25pc of the houses in the new proposal are allocated as affordable homes. There will also be a new access to replace the existing entrance road, which many people were concerned about.

One resident said: 'It would appear that all previous concerns have been addressed in the revised layout. The whole scheme looks good and must be better than a factory shed.'

Another said: 'The western border is improved and new entrance to development. I am concerned about the height of three-storey dwellings in the centre and the effect on surroundings. There is improved landscaping in Beccles Road. The density too high.'

The developer expects to submit the formal application to the council in the next few weeks.
