THE sun seemed to shine just at the right time in Bungay on Saturday, ushering in the visitors to Bungay Horticultural Society's Summer Show.

And it seemed as if the sun continued to shine inside the community centre where visitors could feast their eyes on the splendours of all the members' produce they saw there. Trays of vegetables, all grown to the peak of perfection: juicy plump currants, crisp green gooseberries, dark red beetroots, cauliflowers with the creamiest curds - a feast of colour too.

Among the flowers the fuchsias seeming to just drip from the showbench, with lilies, sweet peas, roses, all presenting their perfect petals to the scrutiny of the judges.

Janet Smith, one of East Anglia's most respected judges said: “The competition was very high this year - the members gave us a lot of work trying to find a winner.”

Indeed, armed with a calculator the judges had to take the points to decimal places to determine which of the vegetable collections was to take first prize but Derek Fairhead just squeezed in ahead of Charlie Clarke and Dick Cook. Dick, however, received 'Best in Show' for the superb quality of his entries in many classes.

The men also excel at cookery, giving the women a run for their money. The men's class this year was for a luscious lemon cake and luscious they looked too.

But the women were not to be outdone: Mrs Wright took 'Best in Show' for her Egg Custard Tart and, with members of the Flower Club also entering this year, the decorative classes zinged, especially the arrangements for the Red Hot! class with some stunning arrangements. Pat Wong took 'Best in Show' there.

The next Horticultural Show is on Saturday, September 6 . For details of how to enter ring the secretary, Didy Ward on 01986 89824 or email didyw@aol.com .
