Members of a girls' football team experienced what it was like to be on the pitch during a live football game.

The Waveney Foxes under-14 team were ball girls at Portman Road on Tuesday night as Ipswich Town took on Cardiff City.

Joined by their proud parents watching in the stands, the girls saw all the action as the blues beat Cardiff 3-1.

Steve Flatt, the team’s coach, said: “It all went very well and they all enjoyed it. As we’ve only got 11 players we had to draft in a few more.

“The girls are mostly Ipswich fans but there were a few Norwich fans too - but they’d love to do it again.”

The team, which has been going for four years and currently sits fourth in the league, includes players from Beccles who travel each week to train at Ormiston Denes Academy and play their matches at Barnard Meadow in Lowestoft.

Mr Flatt said the opportunity for the girls to be involved on the night came out of the blue.

“We got an email through last week saying the Suffolk FA was looking for an under 14s girls’ football team to be ball girls at Tuesday’s match.

“They all did so well and the organiser said they were one of the best groups they’ve ever had.”
