SUSTAINABLE Bungay are celebrating World Carfree Day by cycling to Geldeston Locks to meet and greet a special caravan as it passes through Bungay on its way to the climate change talks in Copenhagen in December.

The Zero Carbon Caravan (ZCC) is travelling from Wales to Copenhagen without using fossil fuel transportation.

Along the route it is connecting with local groups to establish an itinerary of 'zero carbon conferences' to build momentum for zero carbon awareness, including Bungay on Tuesday.

Other caravans, mostly bikes, but also kayaks and skateboards and yachts, are also converging from all across Europe to bring attention to the importance of the talks and our personal and collective cutting of carbon.

Grassroots initiative Sustainable Bungay usually meet on the third Tuesday of every month for green drinks at the Green Dragon, but this month they have formed their own cycling caravan to discuss climate change and Chris Keene's epic two wheeled journey at Geldeston Locks on the River Waveney.

Car Free Day is a world wide annual event characterised by street festivities, mass bicycle rides and free public transportation.

Promoted by the World Carfree Network the day is intended to advance the economic, social and environmental benefits of self-propelled or mass transportation.

It also aims to show how liveable modern cities can be when free from the noise, stress and pollution caused by cars.

Kate Jackson, who organised last year's Bungay Carfree Day with local schools said: “Cycling back from one of our meetings in Ditchingham this summer via Earsham we all remembered how it was when you were a kid on a bike. We thought this evening's bike ride to welcome the caravan would be a good way to recreate the joy of biking together and engage everyone in the small thrills of zero-carbon travel.”

If you would like to cycle with Sustainable Bungay and meet the Zero Carbon Caravan, go to the Buttercross at 7pm, otherwise meet for green drinks at the Locks at 7.30pm.
