A young girl with low functioning autism has been given a specially-adapted trike which will allow her to enjoy rides with her friends and family.

Seven-year-old Amelia Brown from Worlingham suffers from a chromosome disorder, global development delay, sensory processing disorder, hypermobility, autistic spectrum disorder and is non verbal.

And several groups have clubbed together to help fund the trike, which has straps for her feet and waist and wide pedals. The Beccles and District Lions Club, the Rotary Club of Beccles, Helping Hands and The Martineau Trust have all worked together to raise money for the trike.

It was adapted specially for her by Norwich-based NBR Scooter Brokers, which makes a variety of living aids including stairlifts and mobility scooters.

Amelia’s mother Louise Brown said: “Everyone has been so kind and helpful. This generous gift will certainly bring some joy to Amelia and it will allow her the opportunity to go out and about which hasn’t always been easy for her to do. I was really shocked that they got the money together.

“She loves the trike, and it enables us to go out and do more as a family.

“And it means instead of having her in a push chair she can go out on her trike and she feels a bit more independent When the other kids go to the park on their bikes now she can go too.”

Amelia, who is a pupil at the Warren School in Lowestoft, picked out the colour of the bike herself, and it was customised to fit her, although it can be adapted as she grows and should last her until she is about 16 years old.

Lions president Keith Moore said: “After hearing about Amelia and the difficulties her mother and family have gone through, we felt the least we could do was try and help in some way.

“After speaking with friends at the Rotary Club, Helping Hands and The Martineau Trust we decided that the specially adapted trike might be helpful to Amelia and give her some enjoyment.

“This special trike will enable her to have some mobility and help Amelia to mix with others as well as providing a little joy to such a brave young girl.”
