Halesworth's green team to take on rail station

A volunteer group dedicated to making Halesworth greener has been given funding to revitalise the town's railway station.
Halesworth in Bloom is one of just 40 groups in the country to be given £500 worth of support from the Royal Horticultural Society.
Helped by the Halesworth Children’s Gardening Group and Halesworth station adopters, the station will be cleaned of litter, weeded, new planters and hanging baskets will be installed and there will also be new information boards to make the station more welcoming.
The project aims to inspire the local community to give up some of their time to celebrate the station as a historical local landmark.
The planters and hanging baskets will improve the look of the station, but also highlight the importance of environmental sustainability by providing habitats and food for wildlife, made possible by the money for gardening materials as well as advice from the Royal Horticultural Society.
Leader of Halesworth in Bloom Tamsyn Imison said: “By greening our station, its yard and surroundings we will be transforming a dingy, unwelcoming, litter filled grey stopping off and leaving point into a welcoming vibrant hub for Halesworth.
“We hope to engage the whole community as well as visitors to Halesworth, support local businesses, and raise awareness of our unique railway heritage.
“It will also be wonderful to celebrate Her Majesty the Queen’s 90th birthday at the revitalised station with a street party in June. The celebration will be a permanent community record of her historic and remarkable reign.”
Director general of the Royal Horicultural Society Sue Biggs said: “Gardening and being in and around green spaces can provide a range of health benefits.
“There are very few activities that tick so many health and wellbeing boxes for both individuals and communities, and that’s why projects such as Halesworth in Bloom are so important, and why the RHS is delighted to be able to support them.”
