RESIDENTS of the most regal streets in Halesworth have got their bunting at the ready as they prepare to mark the Royal Wedding with a traditional street party.

People living in Queens Drive, Queens Close and Princes Green are busy decorating their homes and pooling their resources to make sure their celebrations to mark Prince William’s marriage to Kate Middleton on April 29 go with a swing.

The idea for the street party came from friends Natasha Bailey and Jacquie Adams and 200 residents of all generations are expected to join in the festivities. Mrs Bailey, who lives in Queens Drive, said: “I was very fortunate when I was a child to a go to a street party for Charles and Diana in 1981. I have got two daughters and I wanted to be able to give them the same experience I had so they could pass that on to future generations.

“I bumped into Jacquie in the street and ran the idea past her and she thought the same.”

Mrs Bailey added: “We have lived in the street for three years and only knew our immediate neighbours, but by knocking on doors and telling people what our plans are I was overwhelmed by the support of everyone.

“We want it to be an event that really brings the community together. I also believe that if we don’t do it this time around these British traditions will get lost.”

Mrs Bailey, 38, said local companies and organisations had been very supportive.

Halesworth Lions had donated a marquee and local firms Pearce & Kemp, Spectra, Castle Clothing, Edwards Restaurant and Larry Adams gardening services had contributed donations towards funds for a children’s entertainer and face painter.

The street party will be opened by well-known local resident Eddie Hyde-Clarke.

Mrs Bailey said: “We are going to have the traditional long tables and my husband has a made a six tier three-foot cake stand to put red, white and blue cakes on. All the residents are making cakes and there will be a barbeque.”

Entrance to the street party is by invitation only.

Mrs Bailey is also helping to organise a Royal Wedding tea party for youngsters at Bramfield Primary School on April 28. The children will parade in fancy dress and wedding cake will be served followed by traditional party games. The event is being organised and run by the parents of the school.
