THE head of the army showed his support for a charity for injured soldiers at an event hosted by a fund-raiser from Henstead on Saturday.

General Sir Richard Dannatt travelled to Suffolk for a dinner and dance in aid of the charity Help For Heroes, which was founded a year and has already raised £10m.

Gen Dannatt attended as a trustee of the charity, which gives support and money to retired and serving service men and women who have been wounded in conflict.

It is one of many links Britain's top soldier has with East Anglia, being a Norfolk landowner and the president of this year's Royal Norfolk Show.

The event's organiser, Fiona Kendall, said donations, an auction and a raffle at the dinner and dance, which she held for 200-guests at her home near Beccles, raised £75,000.

During the evening, the Royal Anglian Regiment Corps of Drums and the Beccles Sea Cadets gave colourful displays, and sentries from the Household Cavalry greeted guests in full state dress.

Mrs Kendall said she had no personal experience of the problems created by wartime injuries, but felt compelled to support those who had. She said: “I heard on the news one day a piece on Big Brother, then a small mention of soldiers killed in Afghanistan. I thought this is mad, this is wrong.”

She said that finding out about the charity drove her to come up with the idea of the event.
