A Worlingham teenager has been picked from hundreds of applicants to spend a year teaching in India.

Amy Mallet, a sixth form student at Bungay High School, will be travelling 4,598 miles in late summer to volunteer with a primary school to help children develop their English language skills.

But the 17-year-old needs to raise £6,200 to fund her trip.

For nearly 50 years Project Trust has been organising voluntary placements in 21 different countries and Amy was chosen by the organisation after a four-day selection process, which took place on the Hebridean Isle of Coll.

Amy will begin her journey in India with an orientation session before joining a project in either southern India or one of the northern states, while living with a host family.

She will find out her specific placement next month, which is likely to be in a school, but there are also opportunities to work with blind children and at an eye hospital.

Amy said: “Project Trust came into my school and did a presentation so I applied online and received an email saying they wanted to meet with me. I went up to the Isle of Coll and we had to carry out a range of different tasks.

“I had to collect firewood for an event they were having on the island and I also had to prepare a presentation related to the Isle of Coll.

“I’ve always been interested in India. I did a textiles course on India and I made my own sari. I didn’t think university was the right pathway for me at the moment. As I’ve grown up I’ve wanted to see the world and get a bit more experience and appreciate someone else’s way of life.”

Amy is planning to hold a number of fundraising activities to raise funds, with the first taking place on Wednesday, February 22, at Bungay High School. From 7pm there will be a neon zumba party run by teacher Vicki Knowles with proceeds going to her trip.
