Bungay is to be decorated with a riot of colour as the town’s In Bloom team announce the theme for planting this year.

The committee has already started planning ways to brighten up the town, and has agreed that an anything goes approach will bathe Bungay in a blaze of colour. The Bungay in Bloom team are also looking at replacing the hanging baskets and planters.

Chairman Simon Thompson said: “We did our best last year but many of the hanging baskets are beyond their sell-by date so we plan to replace them with better baskets that won’t need watering so often.”

Didy Ward, secretary, added: “Our main volunteers, Nikki and Chris, did a sterling job last year but the very hot weather and poor condition of the baskets meant we unfortunately lost some plants.”

Bungay in Bloom also has ambitious plans to install new planters on the lampposts on the eastern side of St Mary’s Street which will complement the tree planters on the other side of the road. Town reeve Mary Sprake is making it one of her fundraising projects for the year and Bungay in Bloom is also starting to raise funds to replace the plastic planters around the town with planters more in keeping with those in St Mary’s Street.

Some of the fundraising will be through the Bungay in Bloom stall at the Garden Street Market due to be held on Sunday, May 14, and there are also plans to run a local lottery as well as placing collection boxes in the local shops. The committee hope it will give everyone in the town the chance to get involved.

Donations of gardening equipment and related items for the tombola would be welcome by Lisa Doubleday at Tops Hairdressers in Upper Olland Street.

Bungay in Bloom would also be pleased to welcome new volunteers, as well as any donations towards the project.

Anyone who can spare some time or would like to donate can visit Didy Ward at Moth Crafts in 16 Upper Olland Street, open Tuesday to Saturday from 10am to 4pm.
