A Beccles woman who re-built her life after a life-changing accident as a child has been nominated for an esteemed national award.

Thirty-two-year-old Gracie Wright was hit by a car at the age of 11 and experienced post-traumatic amnesia.

During her teenage years, she had to re-establish memories and relationships and learn to read and write again. She was also on the receiving end of bullying and suffered from depression.

But having begun work as a nanny later in life, Ms Wright found she was able to help children and families overcome issues that she could relate to.

Her next step was to start writing children’s picture books, before looking to the Prince’s Trust Enterprise Programme, where she was able to discuss her ideas with professionals.

Ms Wright has now been shortlisted for the The Prince’s Trust Young Achiever Award at The Daily Mirror’s Pride of Britain Awards, which celebrate the achievements of remarkable people who try to make the world a better place.

21 years after her accident, Ms Wright expressed how glad she is that she got in touch with the Prince’s Trust, whose Enterprise programme helps unemployed young people start businesses.

“I was convinced that I had a role in highlighting the importance of positive thinking in children’s lives, so I got in touch with the Prince’s Trust and I’m so grateful that I did,” said Ms Wright.

“A business mentor helped me focus my energy and abilities on Silly Eric – my children’s picture book brand – which vibrantly took off!”

Having watched her dreams become a reality thanks to the trust’s help, Ms Wright has now written four children’s books and does all she can to help youngsters and families in the community.

“I run creative writing workshops at schools and holiday camps that inspire children to be the best they can be and how to care for each other,” added Ms Wright.

“I am also an inspirational speaker, talking to large groups of children and adults. When someone comes up to you and says ‘your life story has changed my life’, I know it was all worth it.”

The winner of the award will receive at a star-studded event in London on Monday, October 30. The ceremony will be broadcast the following week on ITV.
