Lions to host first fundraising Bake Off competition
Bakers will be putting their cooking skills to the test in a new Bungay Lions charity event.
The club is holding a savoury Bake Off competition tomorrow, although the cooking will be done behind the scenes at home, with the finished products presented at a tasting event in the town.
The event is an opportunity for both the avid amateur baker and businesses to show their skills in the kitchen and be sampled by the public.
There will be eight categories - sausage rolls, pies and pasties, savoury scones, pizza, quiche, cheese straws, bread products and the wild card for any other savoury treat.
Bungay Area Lions members Karl and Tracy Jackson love watching The Great British Bake Off, and came up with the idea to raise money towards the upkeep of Falcon Meadow, a riverside meadow in Bungay
“We joined the Lions at the start of the year and one of the things we were asked to do was to get involved with the fundraising side of it,” said Mr Jackson.
“We wanted to do something where we could get members of the public and businesses involved and raise funds for charity too.
“It’s a bit of fun and people can pay £2 to come in and eat lots of nice food.”
Falcon Meadow Community Trust was chosen by Lions president Jane Gardiner as her nominated charity for the year.
Mr Jackson said: “The money is going to go towards benches, picnic tables and disabled facilities at Falcon Meadow.
“The money is going back into the community because people can visit the meadow and enjoy it, especially in the summer.”
Each amateur entrant must provide tasters of their products, which will be judged by local dignitaries with certificates for first and second. They must also provide a raffle prize of their goods at the end of the event.
The professionals will be local businesses and shops from the area and will produce tasters of their goods from the same eight categories and also have the opportunity to give away discount vouchers or sell their goods. They too will provide some of their food as a raffle prize.
It is free to enter the competition, and entrance to the event for members of the public will be via a raffle ticket, at £2 for adults and £1 for children, purchased on the door. The event is being held at the Royal British Legion Club in Priory Lane, from 11am to 2pm tomorrow. People entering their goods on the day need to arrive before noon.
To enter in advance, call Mr or Mrs Jackson on 01986 469194 or Mrs Gardiner on 01986 892381.
