Work to transform a town’s former police station into flats will continue this week, with a week-long road closure set to be introduced.

The site, on London Road in Beccles, is to be transformed into eight flats, compromising of one and two bedrooms.

The work comes as UK Power Networks prepare to begin a week-long project to install a new electrical supply scheme to the building.

The work, which is set to begin on Monday, September 21, will see a section of London Road closed until Friday, September 25.

Access to pedestrians and cyclists will be available throughout the works.

A diversion route will be in place for drivers from London Road through Peddars Lane, Blyburgate, then Smallgate.

Earlier this year, East Suffolk Council officers, using delegated powers, gave the green light to a “minor variation” to ammend the initial proposal in a bid to increase the occupancy previously approved by changing three of the flats to two bedrooms, with the remaining five to be one bedroom flats.

Plans for the site had been approved by the then-Waveney District Council in October 2018 to convert the building into eight flats, as well as outline planning permission for two new homes and the demolition of the existing garages.

The front of the former station dates from the 1930s, with the three-storey building including a glass surround, arched roof and sash windows.

The site has been closed to the public for more than four years following the closure in April 2016 - one of 15 in Suffolk to be closed.

In August 2019, the newly renovated police and fire station was officially opened as part of the blue light integration programme, which began four years previously as part of a plan to save money from the public purse and make joint working more efficient.

The Ravensmere site opened on the same day the sale of the former police station was completed, with proceeds from the sale returned to the county’s policing budget.

The site had been put on the market several months earlier for £750,000.

Speaking at the opening of the hub last year, then-town mayor Andrea Downes said: “It is really comforting to know we have a police presence back in Beccles.”
