A loose horse has been killed after being struck by a car on the A12 at Wangford.

The incident occurred just before 6pm yesterday (November 25) with the driver escaping unharmed.

Police were alerted at 5.39pm to reports of two loose horses heading towards the A12.

A police spokesman said: “Members of the public attempted to catch the horses but at 5.54pm we were told they had reached the A12.”

Police arrived on scene shortly after the collision and the second horse was restrained further up the road.

The road was closed between 6pm and 7.30pm as the owners of the horse were contacted and the road was cleared.

In a post on the Suffolk and Norfolk Travel Information Facebook page Phil Perry, the driver involved, explained what happened.

He said: “The first horse collided head on with my car and unfortunately was killed while the second horse continued and was retrained further up the road.

“My car was very badly damaged and I feel extremely lucky to have walked away relatively unscathed.”

Mr Perry added: “I do feel for the horse’s owner as it was a very distressing sight.

“The police and fellow drivers were very supportive to me and worked to clear the road as quickly as possible.”
