STARS of stage and screen joined forces with the people of Halesworth to raise 4,600 for those affected by the earthquake in Haiti.

The second Hope for Haiti concert at The Cut on Sunday was an epic success, boasting top performances from Hollywood actor Andy Serkis, the Blockhead's Chas Jankel, the Lee Vasey Band, and Ed Sheeran.

And Mr Serkis, who recently starred in a film about Ian Dury's life, rocked the audience as he took to the stage for an encore and performed the song everyone had been waiting for- the Ian Dury classic Sex and Drugs and Rock and Roll.

Fellow Lord of the Rings star Bernard Hill had co-organised the gigs, and stepped up on stage for a speech to remind everyone of the plight of Haiti.

And the night had a further Lord of the Rings theme as the director of the trilogy New Zealander Peter Jackson and Frodo actor Elijah Wood appeared via a screen to offer their support as more than 200 people crammed into The Cut.

The combined gigs have raised nearly 8,000, with more money to come in.

Annette Dunning, one of the concert's organisers, said: “It was absolutely brilliant. The place was just absolutely alive, it was buzzing. The concert was almost too good because each of them were so good they should have had longer.

“I just want to say thanks so much to everybody who gave their expertise to ensure the night was a success.”

She singled out Ed Sheeran for special praise, as well as Andy Serkis and Chas Jankel who played a jazz set together. Mr Serkis later played a number of Ian Dury and the Blockheads songs with the Lee Vasey Band.

She added that the concerts had been a good sounding board for the various quality local acts that took part.

Also appearing at the second gig on Sunday were the Bungay High School Choir, soloist Natasha Dobie, members of the Suffolk-based Amplifier Project, and Cuban band Guateque.

Film clips of support were also screened from Gavin and Stacey stars Alison Steadman, Rob Brydon, Larry Lamb and James Corden, actors Peter Sallis, Tom Wilkinson and Richard Griffiths and sports stars Jamie Redknapp and Freddie Flintoff.

Gavin and Stacey lead star Mathew Horne was forced to pull out of an appearance in Halesworth at the last minute due to filming commitments.

The Cut's first Help for Haiti concert took place on Friday, February 26 and featured a whole host of regional musical talent.
