PARKING charges in Beccles, Bungay and Halesworth are set to rise under inflation-busting increases proposed in Waveney.

The cost of parking in Beccles all day will rise by 20p to £2.30 and Halesworth's Station Road car park will have charges introduced for the first time, starting at 35p an hour.

At both Bungay and Halesworth the new tarrifs will see parking cost 35p for the first hour, 65p for two hours, £1 for three hours, £1.30 for four hours and £1.90 for over four hours.

Families spending a day at the beach this summer will be hardest hit by Waveney District Council's latest round of parking charges, with a full day's parking along Lowestoft's South Beach set to rise from £5 to £5.50 - a move which has been branded “sheer and utter madness” by the local MP.

The hourly charge for town centre short-stay spaces in Lowestoft will increase from 50p to 55p, although the daily fee will stay at £2.50.

Bob Blizzard, MP for Waveney, hit out at the rises and said increasing seafront parking charges will put tourists off coming to Lowestoft. He said: “This is sheer and utter madness. While we have no bascule bridge closures over the summer, we should be trying to attract people to Lowestoft.”

People have until July 24 to lodge any written objections.
