Music and high spirits are in full swing at Halesworth's Gig in the Park.

There is a buoyant atmosphere at the annual family festival, according to organiser John Marshall-Potter.

Hundreds of people are attending Gig in the Park, which started yesterday and continues until tomorrow. Music fans are being treated to an eclectic mix of live bands, as well as international food, craft stalls and a well-stocked real ale bar.

Organisers have always taken pride in the event's unique feel and this year is no different with last night's headline act Stockholm-based punk blues band Baskery being followed this evening with the Dhol Foundation and 1970s 2-tone group The Beat.

Tomorrow the event will be closed by The Parkinson Project, an East Anglian orchestra whose shows raise money and awareness for the Parkinson's UK charity

Mr Marshall-Potter, who has been involved in the event since it started and took over in 2003, said its survival can be put down to the fact it is a community event and not a run-of-the-mill music festival.

'It's going really well - the atmosphere is buoyant,' he said.

'People are still coming through the gates.'

Unperturbed by rain earlier today, he added: 'I've been doing outdoor events for 30 years and there's no point worrying about the weather - it does what it does and you can't stop it. Rain can put a damper on things, but 80pc of our ticket sales are in advance so we don't worry about people not turning up.'

Profits from the family-friendly festival are put back into the local community.

Tickets are still available on the door, priced 12 for under 14s and 21 for adults. The festival is open until 11.45pm tonight and from 12pm to 11pm tomorrow.
