DIRECTORS of the new company hoping to take on the running of the outdoor swimming pool in Beccles say they are optimistic after the town council gave its backing to the project.

Leaders at Beccles Lido Ltd are “delighted” that the town council has supported the efforts to save the pool with a cash pledge. The council voted in favour of giving a minimum of 5,000 with a cap of 10,000 for the first year, and of inviting the company to apply for a grant on a yearly basis thereafter.

Maureen Saunders, a director of Beccles Lido Ltd, said: “We are extremely grateful to the town council for their vote of support, particularly considering the difficult financial situation they find themselves in.”

The future of the open-air pool will be discussed by a Waveney District Council scrutiny sub-committee on April 27 at 2pm at the Town Hall in Lowestoft.

The final decision over whether a handover will be made from Waveney to the new company will be made shortly afterwards.
