Problems were solved, while facts and solutions were presented as a project among high schools and a leading Suffolk employer was hailed a success.

More than 100 students from eight schools across Waveney and Great Yarmouth, including Bungay High School, were praised for their involvement in the STEM in Action at Sizewell project.

This science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) project has seen youngsters aged 14 and 15 at the local high schools involved in the initiative for the past few months.

And on Wednesday, a celebration was held at the OrbisEnergy centre in Lowestoft. Certificates were handed out and the overall winning team was selected in the schools’ STEM awards.

Students from Ormiston Denes Academy and Pakefield and Benjamin Britten high schools, in Lowestoft, Cliff Park Ormiston Academy, Ormiston Venture Academy, Great Yarmouth High and Flegg High from Great Yarmouth also all took part in the project.

In July, the teenagers visited Sizewell B power station near Leiston to learn more about the nuclear power station run by EDF Energy on the Suffolk coast. Seeing how electricity is generated in a nuclear power station works, the teenagers were given a tour of the site and the visitor centre before they were given the task of solving a number of problems and working upon these in groups.

On Wednesday – at the culmination of the project – the winning groups from the schools who attended the celebration event then presented their solutions to the STEM problems that they had all been working on in recent months. Among the key observers in the audience was Sue Goodchild, of Connect Education and Business, which runs the STEM Ambassadors project in Suffolk and Norfolk and also oversees a range of programmes aimed at bringing young people into direct contact with employers.

She said: “The presentations included some fantastic content and they were really quite detailed. They all did extremely well working together in teams, solving problems and fact-finding – it was impressive.”

Certificates were presented to the youngsters before one group was chosen as the overall winners – with a team of four girls from Pakefield High School collecting the trophy after they were selected.
