A FAMOUS UK pub chain confirmed this week that it was eyeing up a bid for a prominent Beccles hotel.

The King's Head Hotel in Beccles town centre has been up for sale since early December after the company running it went into administration.

However the pub and hotel may have finally found a new suitor as catering giant J D Wetherspoon revealed it was in negotiations to aquire the establishment.

J D Wetherspoon pubs are a familiar sight around the country, with 781 nationwide including the Troll Cart in Great Yarmouth and the Bell Hotel in Norwich. The pubs offer a variety of food and drink, and are well known for their promotional offers.

The company also owns 16 hotels, the Globe Hotel in King's Lynn being the only one in East Anglia at the moment.

A spokesman for J D Wetherspoon said it was early days, but that the company was in negotiations.

The King's Head Hotel, in New Market, was one of six Norfolk and Suffolk hotels put on the market after three companies owned by Suffolk property millionaire Richard Cattermole were placed into the hands of administrators KPMG because of financial liabilities.

The King's Head Hotel, the Duke's Head Hotel in King's Lynn, the Cliff Hotel in Gorleston, the Wherry Hotel in Oulton Broad, Lowestoft's Hotel Hatfield and the Cavendish Hotel in Great Yarmouth were among 14 hotels and 13 pubs countrywide affected.

Hotel and licensed property specialist Colliers Robert Barry was appointed by KPMG to sell the six hotels in Norfolk and Suffolk, and initially predicted that the new buyers of the hotels would be revealed by April.

Yesterday Colliers Robert Barry was unavailable for comment.

The King's Head Hotel, which has been open as usual since being put up for sale, is in a prominent position in Beccles town centre and offers food, drink, and rooms.

It also has two conference rooms, hosts parties and weddings, and is licensed to host civil ceremonies.
