FANS of US television sitcom Cheers will remember how one regular used to be greeted with the shout of “Norm!”

But one 90-year-old Norfolk pub-goer can boast one better - a seat with his name on a brass plaque.

Alfred Baker's birthday was marked by the landlord of his local, the White Horse at Chedgrave, having the plaque placed on his favourite seat.

He visits the pub at 9pm on the dot every evening he is able to. And landlord Simon Peck marked his birthday with a party, at which the plaque was unveiled. Those present were also invited to Get One in For Alfred by paying for a pint in advance. These have been marked on a card for him to redeem, so he shouldn't have to pay for a drink for a while.

Mr Peck said: “Friends from as far away as Bristol and Australia wanted to contribute, and Alfred has 46 pints ready for him. We knew everyone would want to get him a drink but thought it might be a bit much for one night.

“Alfred is a great favourite with all our regulars and visitors. He has a wealth of local stories and has travelled all over the UK in his work over the years. That's why his birthday cake shows Alfred travelling the country in a car.”

Mr Baker made his first visit to a pub at the age of seven with his dad, Henry. He said: “I remember being given some bread and cheese and a sip of my father's beer. But my first proper pint was in the Feathers, on the A146 at Framingham Pigot.” He has always frequented his local pub and began visiting the White Horse eight years ago. Previous locals include the Otter at Thorpe Marriott, the Maid's Head at Old Catton, the Longe Arms at Spixworth and the Windmill in Knox Road, Norwich.
