WAVENEY is a better council, performing well at managing its resources while making clear improvements to its financial management and its plans to meet local needs, according to a report by the Audit Commission.

The Annual Governance Report, a draft version of which was presented to council on Thursday, summarises the findings from the 2008/09 audit of the council and assesses how well it uses and manages its resources to deliver value for money and better and sustainable outcomes for local people.

Having received a score of one out of four for the past two years, Waveney has this year improved to a score of two indicating that the Audit Commission is now satisfied that the council is performing adequately.

In the area of managing resources, the report states that Waveney is “performing well in planning, organising and developing the workforce effectively to support the achievements of its strategic priorities.”

Mark Bee, leader of the council said: “A number of recent reports have indicated that we have turned an important corner, but this latest document provides the clearest evidence yet that Waveney is a better council. Having accepted the difficult findings in previous years, our improvement plan has realised genuine results and this report reflects the hard work of officers and members alike in ensuring that Waveney delivers the best services as efficiently as possible.”

The report also highlights areas for improvement and raises concerns about value for money.

But Mr Bee is satisfied that these concerns - which reflect the council's performance at March of this year - have already been addressed.
