A team of community volunteers have been busy over the winter months improving and maintaining the commons and ponds at Ilketshall St Andrew, ready to be enjoyed in the spring sunshine.

The ancient grassland between Beccles and Bungay covers an area approaching 100 acres and is dotted with many ponds, all of which require regular maintenance. The ponds on Blacksmiths Common and Great Common were becoming very overgrown and a scheme to regenerate and improve both was agreed, with advice and recommendations coming from Suffolk Wildlife Trust.

Having been cleaned and dug out, volunteers from the village then set about the job of clearing a large pile of brash and scrub which had been left as a result of the work. Other conservation works are regularly undertaken throughout the year together with projects recording the numbers and species of wild birds and butterflies.
