A leisure trust has apologised to its members after concerns were raised about cleanliness and safety at its Bungay facility.

Dean Knieriem, who has been a member at Bungay Pool and Gym for the last 14 years, said the state of the pool area had got worse over the last few years. Despite raising his concerns with management, he said that nothing had been done.

Mr Knieriem, 43, who uses the pool four times a week, said the issues included a broken floor tile which he said had not been replaced for at least four months, and exposed tubing on the seating supports in the changing rooms which he had cut his foot on.

He also raised concerns about the general cleanliness of the pool facilities.

He said: “I’ve spoken to numerous people who are unhappy about it. Some have told me they have spoken to the manager and nothing has been done and some have just left because they were not happy with the condition of the place.

“I’ve tried to raise it with management numerous times and have been told they will get back to me but they never do.”

A £200,000 refurbishment project was completed at the leisure centre off St John’s Road back in September, creating a new-look fitness suite.

And a spokesman from Sentinel Leisure Trust, which runs the centre, has apologised to customers for the issues raised and said the next phase of work at the pool should begin later this year.

He said: “Sentinel Leisure Trust takes hygiene and cleanliness extremely seriously and we would like to apologise for any examples where we have fallen below the high standards we set for ourselves and our customers.

“Some of the concerns raised should have been addressed sooner and we will redouble our efforts to ensure that all customers are entirely satisfied with their experience. Staff inspect the facility on an hourly basis and we actively respond to customer feedback forms. However we will continue to review our procedures to ensure there are no repeats of the issues raised.

“In addition, we are working with Waveney District Council and Pulse Fitness on an investment programme which has already seen £1.1 million spent on upgrading the facility. The next phase will focus on the wet change and pool area which we hope will begin later this year.”

The spokesman said all the issues highlighted by Mr Knieriem have now been addressed.
