The young daughters of a Beccles soldier who died in Afghanistan are preparing for a charity challenge in memory of their father.
Millie and Morgan Fiske, aged 12 and 10, are preparing for the Rock Solid Stars mud run in Milton Keynes next Saturday, October 29 and will be running with other members of armed forces charity Scotty’s Little Soldiers.
Their father, Lance Corporal George Davey, died as a result of a tragic firearms accident nine years ago, leaving behind his wife Joanna and his daughters - who were just two and one at the time.
The 23-year-old served with the 1st Battalion The Royal Anglian Regiment and was at the British base at Sangin, in Helmand Province, Afghanistan, when the accident occurred in May 2007.
The girls became members of the Norfolk charity almost four years ago, which supports bereaved British Forces children across the UK, providing gifts, special experiences and holidays.
The 2km mud run will see the girls tackling a range of obstacles including the great wall, the spider’s web ropes and a dark dive tunnel.
The sisters, who now live in Loddon, said: “Just like us, we’ve lost a parent too and we want all of the other Scotty’s members to know that they’re not alone.
“We’re inspired by the work of Scotty’s Little Soldiers and wanted to support them by raising money as part of our participation in Rock Solid Race.
“Please help us help them by giving whatever you can.
“The more people that know about Scotty’s Little Soldiers, the greater their impact.”
The girls are hoping to raise £250 for the cause, with £220 already collected on their online fundraising page. Their mother, Joanna Fiske, who will watching on the day, said: “I’m so proud of them. They’ve never done anything like this before but they are sporty girls and I know they will love every minute.”
Since joining Scotty’s, Millie and Morgan have become close friends with seven-year-old Jessica Lawrence from Dereham, who lost her dad, Trooper Phillip Lawrence, when she was just nine months old.
They will be completing the challenge with Jessica, along with fellow members Kai and Brooke Scott from King’s Lynn.
A bench in memory of Lance Corp Davey was dedicated on the ninth anniversary of his death earlier this year at Black Boy Meadow in Beccles where the family used to live.
He joined the army in 2004, having completed his training as a infantry solider at the Infantry Training Centre Catterick and joined the 1st Battalion The Royal Anglian Regiment in the same year.
