And to commemorate the centenary of scouting, the 1st Halesworth Scout Group held a special open day where past members came together alongside existing recruits.

The group, based at the Scout Hall on Chediston Street, allowed visitors to view old photographs – some ranging back to the early days before the group had even started.

There was also the chance to view some old memorabilia and uniforms, reminisce about years gone by and even view some of the trophies that have been awarded over the decades.

Group Scout leader Brian Howard said that the showcase event, held last Saturday was even attended by a former member who was part of the group more than 60 years ago.

“It has been a really enjoyable event and we have had a steady stream of people visiting throughout the day – including many people who were involved in the group years ago,” Mr Howard said.

“One person came down who had not been back to the venue for 61 years – some of their stories were remarkable.

“We aimed to remember what went on and to recapture how it used to be.

“Also we wanted to show people that Scouting does still exist in the town and that we are continuing to move forward.”

The group, which has more than 70 members, is also a family affair for many.

Wally Shave has been an Explorer Scout leader for about six years after moving to the area from South Africa 14 years ago.

He was inspired to join after his son became a member.

He said: “It has been fantastic here today – when some of the older guys have been pointing and saying ‘that’s me in that photo’, it is really inspiring.

“We are all trying to expand the group and see what else we can do.

“We have an amazing bunch of people and we are all really good friends – we are creating memories for the kids to cherish.”
