When a new development in Beccles needed a name, only something special would do.
With the first suggestion bearing no relation to the town, it was instead proposed that the naming of the road reflect the history of the area.
And last Friday, the development’s name was officially unveiled.
Hipperson Close off Lowestoft Road takes its name from the family who once ran a garage on that site, and it was officially revealed by 95-year-old Dennis Hipperson.
Mr Hipperson, who was accompanied by several members of his family and a number of friends, said he had fond memories of the garage, and his ancestors who worked hard to set up their business in the town.
Mr Hipperson’s grandfather George and his great uncle Herbert set up their first yard in Puddingmoor, and to this day the family name is well-known in the town.
Beccles town councillor Douglas Peck was the one who suggested the name at a council meeting, and he gave a short speech ahead of the big reveal.
He said: “I think it’s more appropriate that it’s called Hipperson Close and I hope all here today will agree with me.”
Mr Hipperson then pulled the town flag off the sign to applause from the crowd, saying he was ‘surprised’ his family had been honoured.
