TWO special constabulary sergeants have carried out speed and safety checks in Waveney over the past four weeks resulting in three people being arrested for drink driving, six other arrests for offences including drug possession and more than 170 people being dealt with for speeding offences.

Between Monday July 19 and Friday August 13 special sergeant Adrian Young and special sergeant Daniel Peck carried out the checks on various days and at various times of day at approved locations around Lowestoft, Beccles, Flixton, Halesworth and Bungay.

In total they completed 38 hours of speed checks and in that time issued 48 fixed penalty notices for excess speed on a 30mph road, reported six people for summons for the same offence and issued more than 20 fixed penalty notices for other safety-related offences including using a mobile phone while driving and failing to wear a seatbelt.

More than 120 motorists were givens cautions at the roadside in relation to travelling at excess speed on a 30mph road, two were reported for summons for driving without due care and attention and three were reported for summons for driving without insurance.

In addition to this three vehicles were seized for having no insurance, one person was reported for summons for driving without a licence, four vehicle defect rectification forms were issued and five Section 59 warnings were given due to anti-social use of a motor vehicle.

Special sergeant Adrian Young said: "The aim of the checks was to make roads in Waveney safer and by dealing with motorists who are uninsured, unlicensed, driving without due care and attention and speeding we believe we have gone some way to achieving this.

"The operation has also allowed us to input many intelligence submissions, encounter and search many people and their vehicles and also to educate a large number of drivers about road safety.

"We are pleased with how the campaign has gone and we hope to repeat it in future."

As special constabulary volunteers both special sergeant Young and special sergeant Peck gave up their own time to help make our roads safer.
