Global Sharing Day has been celebrated around the world today and Stephen Fry had some finely-honed web wisdom to share with his millions of Twitter followers.

Mr Fry, who is a director of Norwich City Football Club and grew up in Booton, near Reepham, has become synonymous with micro-blogging website Twitter in recent years and has just over five million followers.

In the spirit of Global Sharing Day Mr Fry, one of the stars of the upcoming movie version of The Hobbit, tweeted using his @stephenfry account to say: 'Streetlife.com is a rather fine free site for sharing with locals. Do join in and make it a neighbourly #GlobalSharingDay'

Streetlife, a sister website of this website, aims to make it easy for people to connect, discuss and share with other people in their neighbourhood online.

Over 1,000 new members had signed up at www.streetlife.com within hours of Mr Fry's tweet, which received more than 130 retweets - when people republish Mr Fry's original tweet to their own followers.

Nina Whittaker, head of communities at Streetlife, said: 'Over the past few months thousands of Norfolk locals have joined streetlife.com to connect and share with their neighbours, and it's been great to see the site quickly become a lively source of local knowledge and support.

'Stephen Fry lending his support, along with the enthusiastic response from his huge Twitter following, has not only helped us grow our community in Norfolk, it's also raised the profile of streetlife.com in neighbourhoods across the nation.'
