The trial of a 50-year-old Suffolk man accused of causing the death of a pedestrian by careless driving is due to take place next month.

Before Ipswich Crown Court yesterday for a pre-trial review was Andrew Saunders, 50, of Swan Close, Halesworth.

He had denied causing the death of 42-year-old Shane Lay by dangerous driving in Bungay in May 2016, but the prosecution offered no evidence on this charge and a not guilty verdict was entered on the court record.

Saunders then pleaded not guilty to a less serious charge of causing Mr Lay’s death by careless driving and a four to five day trial will take place on this charge on May 21.

The incident happened at around 1.40am on Friday, May 13 2016 in Bridge Street, where Mr Lay was involved in a collision with a Nissan Qashqai.

Mr Lay was taken to Addenbrooke’s Hospital for treatment, but died the following day.
