Runners are gearing up for the biggest ever Bungay Black Dog Festival of Running on Sunday.

The event will include a marathon, half marathon, 10k and a fun run, and over 1,000 people are scheduled to take part, with hundreds expected to line the streets and support the runners.

Among those taking part in the running festival is a team from Emmaus Norwich.

David Dunbar will do the fun run, Darren Mcghee is running his first 10k, Graham Jenvey will be doing the half marathon and Rebecca Wass will be running the full marathon - dressed as Wonder Woman.

The four are all members of the Bungay Black Dog Running Team and wanted to take part as Emmaus is one of the charities the festival is raising money for, along with the NSPCC.

The rest of the companions and volunteers at the charity, which works with people who are homeless, as well as a trustee from Emmaus will be cheering them on from the Tally Ho water station and various stations around the course where they will be marshalling.

Community support manager Ms Wass said: “We are incredibly grateful to the members of the Bungay Black Dog Running Club for choosing our charity to support this year as the money raised will enable us to offer more support to our companions and to new referrals as well.

“We have been training hard for the event, including running with the club as well as running as a core Emmaus team around the road of Ditchingham, we even had our own tail cyclist on some of our runs. It’s been great to get the whole community involved in such a large event locally and to be part of it.

“Although I’m wishing I hadn’t been so excited when I heard we had been the chosen charity as the excitement came out my mouth when I agreed to run the full distance meaning I haven’t had a rest from long running for over a year.

“We have raised over £500 already in sponsorship which makes all the training worthwhile.”

Others who will be running the course include former army sergeant major Jimmy Mac from Bungay, who is hoping to complete the half marathon course in three-and-a-half hours with a fridge freezer on his back, along with student nurse Mandeep Kharpal, 25, from Bilston in the West Midlands, who will be visiting Bungay as part of his challenge to run four marathons in four weeks dressed as a monkey.
