Tesco urges community groups in Beccles to sign up for funding
Community projects in Beccles could receive a cash injection thanks to Tesco’s Bags of Help initiative.
Tesco teamed up with Groundwork to launch the monthly roll-out of its funding scheme, which sees grants of up to £4,000 – all raised from the 5p bag levy – being awarded to local community projects.
The scheme has already delivered £30m to over 4,600 projects up and down the UK and the supermarket is now calling on community groups in Beccles to put themselves forward for a grant.
Last year, Beccles Caxton Football Club received a grant through the initiative, which went towards a project to transform the old tennis courts at Caxton Meadow into an all-weather sporting facility for use by schools, sports clubs and community groups.
Three groups in each area will be awarded grants every other month, and Tesco customers will have the chance to vote with a token given to them at the check-out every time they shop.
Lindsey Crompton, head of community at Tesco, said: “The money raised from our customers buying bags is making a big difference to local communities across the country. Thanks to Bags of Help, £30 million has been spent so far on local projects like parks, sports facilities, school playgrounds and community gardens – projects that have all been chosen by our customers.”
Groundwork’s national chief executive Graham Duxbury, said: “Bags of Help has already made an incredible difference to local projects and groups across the UK and we are incredibly proud to have been involved in delivering this amazing initiative.
“The new extended criteria monthly format will see even more groups benefit from Bags of Help grants which is why we’re encouraging groups in Beccles to make sure they come forward and apply in order to benefit from this fantastic opportunity.”
Community groups and charities can apply for funding and Tesco customers and colleagues can nominate projects they would like to see receive some cash.
