Brazen thieves smashed down the door of a town centre store to steal over £100, just days before the shop closes for good.

After five years of successfully running her Lowestoft business, Rebecca Davis said she "faced a blow" when she came into work on Monday morning (January 13) to see thieves had broken in the night before.

They smashed down the glass door to Market Pet Shop, on London Road South, and stole the till which had roughly £100 inside of it.

"It was the first time I had left the till in the draw and didn't leave the till open. I do this every other time," Mrs Davis said.

The shop has been planning its closure for a while, with its last day serving customers being this Friday, January 17.

Mrs Davis continued: "I would like to say that in the five years of us owning our shop we have been welcomed and supported by a wonderful community and we have loved every minute of being here.

"We will not let this ruin our last few days running our business and thank all of our customers for there support over the years and support they have shown us today with this sad news."

Mrs Davis added that she forgives those who stole from her, and said: "We will be holding you in our prayers.

"We will be open for the rest of the week and look forward to finishing on a high."

Announcing the break in on Facebook, customers said they were disappointed to hear the news.

One person said: "They knew you were closing, wicked people!"

Another added: "I wish you the absolute best for the future. A tough day indeed."

A spokesperson for Suffolk Police confirmed they were called to reports of an overnight break-in on London Road South, with a glass door smashed to gain entry and a till stolen.

"The theft is believed to have taken place between 5.30pm on Sunday, January 12 and 8.15am on Monday, January 13", a spokesperson said.

Anyone with information about the incident is urged to contact officers on 101, quoting crime reference 2621/20.
