TWO new replica Beccles town signs were put up this week to complete a project to have one at each of the five main entrances to the town.

With the help of the mayor, David Smith, and two groups of people, the signs - replicas of the original one at the Ballygate-Bungay road junction - were unveiled at George Westwood Way, near the Morrison's foodstore, and the Lowestoft Road-Ellough Road junction.

Last year signs were installed at London Road and at the bottom of Northgate.

At the unveiling at Ellough Road, the mayor was helped by four pupils from Worlingham Middle School who won a competition organised by headteacher David Baker.

The four were Chelsea Topping, Abbey Clerk, Vikki Roe and Jake Yallop.

And at George Westood Way, members of the Crisp family took part. Eric Crisp, who died earlier this year, had made the posts and plinths for the signs, and as well as the unveiling a plaque was placed on the structure dedicating it to Mr Crisp.

His widow Zena, daughter Margaret, granddaughter Clare and her children Shannon and Adele, and Eric's son Colin and grandson David, were there for the poignant ceremony.

David had done a lot of the work in erecting the signs.

The project has been funded by the town council through the Pride in Beccles group.

John Sigsworth, who is on both, said this week: “We have now covered all the main entrances to the town and the project is complete. The new signs are fibreglass moulds of the original. John Sayer, of the Beccles Society, arranged for them to be made and painted.”
