During April the Beccles and Bungay Safer Neighbourhood Team (SNT) received numerous complaints about the pedestrian crossing on the junction of Blyburgate and Peddars Lane.

Parents of local school children identified how when the filter arrow comes on to turn right from Blyburgate to Peddars Lane, motorists queue across the junction, and when the lights go red they continue to turn, thinking they are blocking the junction.

However the motorists do not realise that all the lights are red and that the green man has come on for pedestrians to cross the road. This means that the school children who are attempting to cross are being confronted by vehicles still driving over the crossing.

Following discussions with the SNT, Suffolk County Council Highways they have now agreed to re-phase the lights so that the crossing light does not come on until all cars have cleared the junction.

Police have been told that this will happen in the next fortnight.

The SNT were also busy with other crime reduction initiatives in April.

Street Meets were held in the market towns of Beccles and Bungay where over 300 purse chains were given away to older and more vulnerable shoppers to combat the spate of purse thefts that have been occurring in north east Suffolk and across the county.

The Team also held a street meet in Barnby and North Cove at the Barnby Nursery Centre where 20 shed alarms were given away to members of the public.
