Six primary schools across Waveney were among those presented with awards at Suffolk County Council’s Junior Road Safety Officer Scheme awards ceremony.

More than 100 pupils and staff from schools across Suffolk attended the awards at the council’s headquarters in Ipswich, where pupils were given a chance to sit in the seats normally reserved for councillors and discuss concerns and ideas about road safety.

Pupils were presented with gold, silver and bronze awards for the quality and content of their safety schemes and one of the highlights included three pupils from Brampton Primary School who wrote and performed their own road safety song. Charlotte Gray, Stanley Mackintosh and Thomas Philshie were chosen to represent their school at the start of the year and have been working with teachers and their local police officer to come up with ways to improve road safety in and around their school.

Brampton headteacher Vicky Allen said: “We were extremely proud of the children. The song went down really well and the children did much more than was expected of them.

“They have produced a scrapbook of all their ideas and competitions and have presented their findings in school assemblies to the younger children and to parents.”

Brampton Primary School was awarded a gold award for its scheme along with Barnby and North Cove Primary, Crowfoot Primary and Wenhaston Primary. Meanwhile Ringsfield Primary was presented with a silver award and Albert Pye was presented with bronze.

Mary Evans, assistant cabinet member for roads, planning and transport, said: “The Junior Road Safety Officer Scheme raises awareness among young people about road safety and helps contribute towards casualty reduction in the county. The scheme gives pupils a voice on issues affecting them, their school and their local community.”
