A crowd of nearly 200 people gathered at Woodton playing field to see the return of football to the village.
Football has not been played in the village since the old team folded in the early sixties but after a grant from Sport England and the support of Fields in Trust, a new pitch was laid.
Norwich City legend Robert Fleck was the guest of honour and carried out the ceremonial kick off for the match between the newly formed Woodton FC and Suffolk League Division Three opponents Halesworth Town.
Woodton FC played in their old colours of black and red but Halesworth proved to be too strong for Woodton and ran out as 2-4 winners.
“It was fitness that told in the end,” said player/manager James Roberts. “I thought the new pitch played well and we were all impressed with the new strip, support and interest given by the people of Woodton.”
Players from the old team, Robin Buck, John Clitheroe, Paul Baldwin, John Baldwin, Peter Read, Bob Wright, George Ling and David Leeder all attended the celebratory day to cheer on the new boys.
Mr Fleck, who made 299 appearances for the Canaries and scored 84 goals, spoke to people and posed for photographs.
Tony Read, chairman of the Playing Field Trustees, said: “It has been a super day and has made a dream come true for the trustees and made all the hard work worth while.”
The new pitch adds to a number of other projects which have been completed at the playing field over the last 10 years, with grants for the entrance, road and car park, playground equipment, a shelter and adult gym.
